Marshall University (MU) School of Medicine Community and School Oral Health Team supports the West Virginia Oral Health Coalition and the West Virginia Dental Hygienists’ Association for 2017 Smile West Virginia held at the state capitol.
Participants were provided an overview of the legislative process and learned basic lobbying skills from a variety of healthcare and governmental relations professionals. Students also toured the West Virginia Capitol and witnessed the reading of a proclamation for Dental Hygienists’ Day.
Wendy Mosteller with MU led the students in activities both days and had this to say, “The 2-day Legislative event was a wonderful opportunity for the future dental hygiene professionals from across West Virginia to network and get to know each other. Also, it was refreshing to witness the students come together for one common goal of seeing oral health improved in the future for all WV citizens.”
“The goal of the project was to support an educational, legislative day for our future dental hygiene professionals” said WVDHA President Amanda Stottlemyer. “I believe that by fostering a spirit of comradery, & allowing students the opportunity to share with legislators their role as oral health educators it will strengthen our future professionals.
This event was made possible due to the support of Marshall University School of Medicine and the DentaQuest Foundation
